A revolutionary airway training device invented by a New Zealand specialist anaesthetist will be showcased at the upcoming NWAC conference to be held in Bangkok, Thailand this month.
Dr Paul Baker, an international authority on difficult airway management and Founder and Director of Airway Simulation Limited, recently launched the ORSIM Bronchoscopy Simulator for medical professionals, hospitals, clinics and universities around the world and was pleased with the positive response.
“We have been thrilled with the feedback from clinicians and educators who have told us what a difference this device will make to patient care and medical education,” says Baker.
The ORSIM Bronchoscopy Simulator is an innovative product designed to improve bronchoscope dexterity through hands-on training. It is intended for healthcare professionals in anesthesiology, pulmonology, otolaryngology, critical care and emergency medicine.
Baker developed the simulator after identifying the need to address inadequate practice and lack of clinical experience as the main barriers to the development and maintenance of flexible bronchoscopy skills by physicians globally.
“The ORSIM system is built around the philosophy of learning through regular practice and on the principles of simplicity, accessibility and economy. It develops essential skills and knowledge to deliver improved care,” says Baker.
The simulator has received recognition from anaesthetic organisations around the world. It was awarded first place in the Science Exhibit at the International Anesthesia Research Society 2011 Annual Meeting in Vancouver. In 2012 it was named runner up at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Science and Education Exhibition in Washington DC.
Dr Pierre Bradley, Staff Anaesthetist at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Chairman of ANZCA Airway Management Special Interest Group, was impressed with the ORSIM simulator.
“We trialled the ORSIM on the Advanced Airway Management Refresher course and were so impressed by its ability to cater for novice to expert practitioners, that we purchased it to enhance our own department’s bronchoscopy training”.
The ORSIM system consists of three main parts: a replica video bronchoscope, a desktop sensor and a dedicated laptop with software program. The laptop allows for easy storage and mobility for in situ teaching. This facilitates deliberate practice and distributed learning near the operating room.
The ORSIM bronchoscopy simulator will be on display at the 4th NWAC 2013 which will take place April 23 – 27 in Bangkok, Thailand. NWAC is a global networking educational organization in anaesthesiology with worldwide presence, independent of trans-national politics, international conflicts, and political disagreements. In its 5 years of existence, NWAC has trained countless anesthesiologists, emergency physicians and other health care-related professionals across the globe, regardless of their country of origin, nationality, religion, race, colour, gender or sexual orientation.
